Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.

To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to have:

Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE); and
- completed 200 credits of subjects;
- achieved a grade of C* or better in the Personal Learning Plan, 20 credits of literacy, 10 credits of numeracy and the Research Project at Stage 2;
- achieved a grade C- or better in an additional 60 credits at Stage 2;
- obtained a competitive ATAR.
* For Stage 2 subjects a grade of C- or better is required
- completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma, obtaining a minimum score of 24 points and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed or partly completed a recognised bachelor degree or postgraduate program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed the University Foundation Studies program obtaining a competitive score.

Aim

The Laws Double Degree will provide a professional level of education for students seeking to pursue a legal career. Study in a complimentary discipline will provide students with the background to enable them to operate in a wide range of working environments, depending on the second discipline.

Content & Structure

The total number of units required is 180 - that is, 40 courses. Those 40 courses are divided as follows between the two degree programs: 24 courses from the Bachelor of Laws program; and 16 courses from the Second Degree .

Six courses (27 units) from the Bachelor of Laws program are not prescribed, enabling double degree students to complete the Honours program (9 units), one additional law elective (4.5 units) and the three practice elective courses (13.5 units).

Rules

1. The Laws Double Degree comprises 40 courses totalling 180 units and includes: 24 courses from the Bachelor of Laws program; and 16 courses from the Bachelor of Science Degree.

2. Eligible students may include a single Honours dissertation worth 9 units in the final year in place of two 4.5 unit electives.

Notes

1. Students seeking admission to practice law must complete the following courses: LAWS 4002 Civil Procedure; LAWS 4003 Evidence; and LAWS 4006 Professional Conduct.

2. Subject to the approval of the Program Director, students may take one of the following courses in lieu of MATH 1040 Statistics for Laboratory Sciences 101: MATH 1052 Statistics for Business; or MATH 1034 Statistics and Research Methods. However, students who select a major or minor in Mathematics should enrol in MATH 1036 Statistical Methods.

3. Students must select one science major, totalling not less than 36 units, from the list below. The major will include at least 9 units of level three courses. Prerequisites will normally apply as the student progresses. Science Majors: Applied Physics (Mawson Lakes Campus); Biology (City East Campus); Chemistry (City East Campus); Computer Science (Mawson Lakes Campus, Magill Campus); Environmental Systems (Mawson Lakes Campus); Geoscience (Mawson Lakes Campus); Geospatial Information Systems (Mawson Lakes Campus, City East Campus); and Mathematics/Statistics (Mawson Lakes Campus).

4. In addition to the science major, students must select a science minor, totalling not less than 18 units, from the list below. The minor will normally include at least 9 units of level two courses. Prerequisites will normally apply as the student progresses. Science Minors: Applied Physics (Mawson Lakes Campus); Biology (City East Campus); Chemistry (City East Campus); Computer Science (Mawson Lakes Campus, Magill Campus); Computer Systems Engineering (Mawson Lakes Campus); Electronic Microengineering (Mawson Lakes Campus); Environmental Systems (Mawson Lakes Campus); Geoscience (Mawson Lakes Campus); Geospatial Information Systems (Mawson Lakes Campus, City East Campus); Mathematics/Statistics (Mawson Lakes Campus); and Psychology (Magill Campus).

5. Certain combinations of majors and minors, or courses within them, are precluded because of similarity of content. Furthermore, due to the constraints of the timetable, only selected combinations will be available in any year. The placement of courses in later years of the schedule is nominal, and may be rearranged according to availability.

6. Elective Courses: (a) For one elective course (4.5 units) the student must select an additional level 3 course to extend the science major or minor. This course will normally be done in the student's third year; (b) For one elective course (4.5 units) the student must select a science course which may, with the approval of the Program Director, come from a discipline other than the major and minor. This course may be at any level; (c) For one elective course (4.5 units), the student may select from the list of Undergraduate Elective Courses.

Professional accreditation and recognition

This program covers in a comprehensive way the academic requirements for admission to practice as specified by the national Law Admissions Consultative Committee and applied in South Australia by the Legal Practitioners Education and Admission Council. In addition to the academic requirements of the program, students seeking admission to practice are required to complete an approved practical legal training (PLT) program. Students seeking admission to practice in other Australian jurisdictions should apply to the appropriate admitting authority.
