Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.

To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to have:

Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE); and
- completed 200 credits of subjects;
- achieved a grade of C* or better in the Personal Learning Plan, 20 credits of literacy, 10 credits of numeracy and the Research Project at Stage 2;
- achieved a grade C- or better in an additional 60 credits at Stage 2;
- obtained a competitive ATAR.
* For Stage 2 subjects a grade of C- or better is required

Alternatively, the minimum educational requirements may be met by those who have fulfilled prerequisite requirements and:
- completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for university entry under SACE;
- completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma, obtaining a minimum score of 24 points and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education + institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed the University Foundation Studies, Applied Science and Engineering program;
- completed the Associate Degree in Engineering program at the University of South Australia.

Aim

The program aims to prepare students for a professional career in Civil Engineering with emphasis on project-based and industry focussed learning for sustainable development of infrastructure.

Content & Structure

The first two years of the program provide a broad base in engineering and science courses needed for civil engineering careers as well as providing hands on experience in areas such as road design and surveying, and an introduction to the main specializations available in civil engineering. In third year students focus in detail on the disciplines of structural, water and wastewater, geotechnical and environmental engineering - and their interaction with the environment. Fourth year provides students with the opportunity to continue with a broad cross-section of civil engineering studies through the choice of 4 electives and two major projects. Half of the fourth year is devoted to project work, both design and investigation.

Total units to complete the program are 144. It is possible to complete this program in less than four years by undertaking courses offered during study periods 1, 4 and 7. This accelerated option will be offered by the Program Director to students who achieve outstanding grades in the first year.

Notes

1. It is a requirement of Engineers Australia that students complete a minimum period of 12 weeks of industrial experience in a relevant industry prior to graduation. Assessment in the course Industrial Experience N will remain incomplete until the student submits a written report and receives a pass.

2. Civil Engineering Electives may be chosen from the courses listed in the schedule above. Not all courses may be available each study period. Not all electives will be offered every year. Other options not listed in the schedule may only be taken with the prior agreement of the Program Director.

3. Students may select a freely chosen Elective course from any other School or Division. A list of elective courses is available from the UniSA website. The selection will be subject to availability and satisfaction of pre-requisite requirements.

4. Students enrolling in specialisation electives from the Masters programs (courses that have a number starting with 5) will need to complete a career permission override form and get it signed by the School.
