For year 6-8 students
A special Science Week program of fun, engaging STEM activities for middle school students, STEM Day Out is a series of three STEM workshops focussing on the science of flight, puzzling mathematics, and the engineering design process.
Students participate in three different activities, each of which is linked to a degree at UniSA and one of the STEM learning areas:
Students explore the science of air – how it moves, how strong it is, and some of the amazing ways it behaves. They discover the science behind planes and how planes fly, and construct their own simple model plane wing.
Through a series of fun, captivating brain-benders, students discover why puzzles are fundamental to mathematical thinking and explore how mathematical thinking links to problem solving.
In small groups, students design and construct the tallest tower possible using the engineering design process and limited materials, while developing their collaborative working, communication and time management skills.
