Course overview

The purpose of this program is to increase your understanding, skills and expertise in supervising learners in the workplace through applying teaching and learning principles and approaches within the work setting.

The Professional Certificate in Practice Education & Supervision is available to health professionals who supervise either students, and/or staff within their work roles. It should be noted that, as the program is delivered online, it is expected you have sufficient computing skills to engage in online learning, word processing, and browsing the internet.

You will also require reliable access to the internet in order to access the online learning resources.

Course structure

The Professional Certificate in Practice Education & Supervision is comprised of two 4.5 unit courses (a full year load is 36 units). The certificate is online, and taken over 20 weeks of part-time study.

Participants who complete the Professional Certificate in Practice Education & Supervision will be given credit for 9 units of the Graduate Certificate in Health Sciences (Clinical Education) and the Graduate Certificate in Nursing (Nurse Education).  Students will need to complete a further 9 units to be awarded the Graduate Certificate.

  • Participants are familiarised with the clinical and practical elements of their role as a practice educator
  • Topic 1: Exploring the practice educator role
  • Topic 2: Practice education context
  • Topic 3: The clinical environment as a learning environment

Supervising & Facilitating Learners in the Work Setting

  • Facilitate the learning and supervision of learners, according to adult learning principles and approaches
  • Learn how to manage diversity in learners’ abilities and skills
  • Learn supervision strategies 
  • Learn how to manage difficult situations

Assessment

  • Every module within each course has associated assessed activities, to provide you with feedback on your learning.
  • The assignments are very practical, based on your professional work situation, and result in the creation of a useful product; such as an audit, briefing paper, mindmap or report. These products are designed to help you develop tools to improve your practice as a supervisor.

Cancellation policy

The University of South Australia reserves the right to cancel events and issue refunds.  In the event that an attendee cannot attend, a substitute is welcome to attend in their place.  No refunds will be given unless 21 days notice is given in writing prior to the date of the planned event. If less than 21 days the fee can be used for the same course at a later stage, or another course of the same value.

Withdrawal policy
