This graduate diploma has been developed to meet the needs of educators in Islamic schools or educators in state and private schools with a high percentage of Muslim students.
It has been designed in collaboration with our research and industry partners to provide you with the knowledge, pedagogical and practical skills to promote learning for Muslim students in diverse educational settings. If you wish to contribute to research development in Islamic education, and education more broadly, you can also use this qualification as a pathway to a Master of Education and doctoral studies.
This qualification is highly flexible in its delivery, you can study full-time or part-time and all courses are offered online, offering flexibility so you can tailor your studies to your teaching schedule. If you decide to exit this program after the first four courses, you will receive a Graduate Certificate in Education (Islamic Education).
The Graduate Diploma in Education (Islamic Education) offers professional learning aligned with contemporary educational polices, standards and practices, within the framework of Islamic teaching.
The courses you will study relate to contemporary issues, and include themes of student wellbeing and managing learning environments. You will develop skills to better meet the needs, and improve the quality of education, for Muslim students.
You will graduate with foundations in contemporary Islamic theology, and in Islamic teaching across a range of diverse educational settings for Muslim students.
If you wish to contribute to research development in Islamic education, and education more broadly, you could consider continuing with a Master of Education or a PhD. If you decide to exit this program after the first four courses, you will receive a Graduate Certificate in Education (Islamic Education).

The curriculum for this graduate diploma is informed by our world-class research (research that has been ranked number one in SA1) and it delves into current debates, theories and research relevant to this specialisation. Our commitment to research with an industry focus is unprecedented in South Australia. In the 2015 nationwide Excellence in Research for Australia evaluation, 97 per cent of our assessed research was rated world-class or above.

As a graduate of this qualification, you could reasonably expect to find employment in Islamic schools or possibly Madrassahs, Pesantrens, or in state and private schools with a high percentage of Muslim students. Educational settings could range from early childhood to school learning.

$7,000 for a full year is available for students who are interested in undertaking specified activities with the aim of enhancing the overall student experience at UniSA.

I am a Research Fellow and the Program Director for Islamic Education. I have over twenty years’ experience in education combing roles of teacher, principal, consultant, researcher and lecturer. I am a passionate advocate for Islamic schools and Islamic education in Australia.
I am also a member of an International network of educators on the Islamic Teacher Education Program (ITEP), a project of Razi Education (Canada, UAE). I completed a Master of Education (Leadership) through the National Centre of Excellence for Islamic Studies (NCEIS), Griffith University, examining education leadership and school vision. His research interests include Islamic pedagogy, character education and teacher training. My PhD research focuses on Islamic pedagogy in Australian Islamic schools and aims to further efforts towards renewal and inform teaching training. I am a co-editor of Islamic schooling in the West: Pathways to renewal (Palgrave MacMillan, forthcoming).
There are a number of ways to apply to study UniSA's undergraduate and postgraduate coursework degrees.
Applications for admission into the University of South Australia’s undergraduate and most postgraduate degrees are made via the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC). Visit satac.edu.au and follow the links.
For the MBA degrees please apply through the UniSA MBA Application Portal. Applications for a small number of degrees are submitted direct to UniSA through our Apply Online portal. It will be noted on the degree page if you need to apply via Apply Online.
Postgraduate study by research

Undergraduate
Yes. The deadline to apply to study a degree at UniSA for semester one (commencing late February) and be given equal consideration is in early December. While you may be able to apply after this date, you are not guaranteed to be considered equally with other applicants and your application may not be assessed in time for the main round of offers (mid January). Postgraduate
Most postgraduate degrees do not have a closing date for applications. However, there are exceptions, so it is best to check – either on the SATAC website, Apply Online or the degree homepage. Postgraduate offers are normally ‘rolling’, meaning they may be sent out at any time up until the program starts. This also means that applications may close at any time without warning, if the quota is filled earlier. For this reason, postgraduate applications should be submitted without delay. Credit transfer or advanced standing
You may be eligible to receive a credit transfer or advanced standing for your chosen UniSA degree based on your previous studies, if they are in a related area at an equivalent or higher level. Receiving a credit transfer will reduce the number of courses you undertake within the degree, and may also reduce the overall duration of your degree.
Recognised prior learning
If you have related industry experience, you may also be eligible to receive recognised prior learning for this experience. Receiving recognised prior learning will normally reduce the number of courses you undertake within the degree, and can reduce the duration of the degree.
How do I get credit?
Credit transfer and recognition of prior learning is assessed on a case-by-case basis by the Program Director who will discuss your prior learning and experience with you to ascertain what credit you may be eligible for.
