Gain the practical skills and knowledge needed to practice as a registered nurse in Australia.
Our bridging and re-entry qualification is designed for registered nurses who hold an overseas degree, and previously registered Australian nurses who wish to re-enter the workforce.
Students with an overseas degree will study on campus, and previously registered Australian nurses will study online. All students attend on campus workshops and learn in our clinician-led, authentic, simulated hospital and health service (HHHS). Clinical placement will prepare you for a rewarding career in one of the most important sectors of healthcare.
Students who undertake activities where interaction with patients/the public is required for their degree, such as field or clinical placements/visits and in University clinics and gyms, must demonstrate they meet mandatory pre-placement conditional requirements. These include criminal history clearance, a Working with Children Check and immunisation requirements. Please visit the Clinical Placement Unit for information on key requirements, and to access the full student checklists.
On entry to the qualification you will be required to confirm that you meet the ‘Fitness to Practice in Clinical Placements’ requirements.
This graduate certificate will provide you with the knowledge and practical skills needed to work as a registered nurse in Australia.
You’ll review the Australian healthcare system along with the legal and ethical principles related to nursing, mental health, Aboriginal health, acute aged care and nursing research.
Other topics include the development of professional and inter-professional communication and relationships. In addition to this, you will look at the lifespan approach to physical examination, primary healthcare and disease prevention, caring for clients with complex conditions and also take part in skills development and simulation activities.

UniSA has invested millions of dollars in on-campus clinics and facilities. As a nursing student, you can participate in clinical learning and practise within the HHHS throughout your degree, in addition to off-campus clinical placements.
The HHHS is a fully equipped, state-of-the-art clinical learning environment populated by residents of the Horizon City and Community – a virtual health community which is unique to UniSA. It is designed to facilitate, enhance and support your understanding of real-world nursing practice. Residents of Horizon include interactive manikins each with their own persona, as well as real people acting as residents, who have their own personal stories, relationships and health histories.
As part of your studies, you will regularly engage and interact with Horizon residents, both within the virtual environment and in HHHS to develop and practise your nursing knowledge and skills.
