Course aim

To develop students’ understanding of Muslim histories, civilisations, interconnections, and contributions. Through exploring the diverse historical and cultural trajectories of Muslim communities, students will gain insights on where and how to make curriculum connections in the HaSS learning area.

Course content

This course will be structured around themes connecting Muslim histories and heritage and the HaSS Early Years Learning Framework and Australian Curriculum with an emphasis on General Capabilities and Cross Curriculum Priorities. Thematic snapshots about Muslim civilisations, contributions, beliefs, practices, migrations and interactions will provide pre-service teachers with insights about Muslim peoples and places, facilitating culturally responsive pedagogy for improved learning outcomes in primary classrooms. An analysis of dominant frames about Islam and Muslims depicted in the media will accompany a re-reading of Muslim history and heritage, challenging stereotypical understandings. Students can expect to reflect on and gain practical approaches to expand their repertoire of culturally responsive pedagogy in relation to the diversity of Muslim students.
