Course aim

Students will develop the knowledge and skills to create a positive classroom environment and to plan and assess effective learning and teaching experiences for school aged children consistent with their role as pre-service teachers within schools and their communities.

Course content

Students will understand the nature of teachers’ work, evidence based teaching and learning practices. Students will develop positive, effective classroom environments including issues of collaboration, problem solving, conflict resolution and negotiation. Students will understand the centrality of teacher-student relationships to learning, building connections with parents/ caregivers. Students will negotiate the complexity of the mentor-student teacher relationship, plan learning experiences for small and whole class groups using appropriate curriculum documents. Students will develop assessment strategies with an emphasis on prior knowledge, formative assessment and timely feedback and strategies for reflexive practice.
