Course aim

To enable students to develop a sound understanding of the healthcare for the neonate with complex needs and demonstrate integration of family-centred care in the midwifery management.

Course content

Assessment of the healthy neonate and comparison to the ill, compromised or preterm neonate; basic embryology related to specific neonatal health conditions, pathophysiology of neonatal health conditions; care planning and midwifery management of the neonate with complex needs; neonatal resuscitation; use of technology and clinical skills; pharmacology in neonatal care; evidence-based midwifery practice in caring for the neonate with complex needs; incorporation of family-centred care in the midwifery management of the neonate with complex needs; legal, ethical and cultural considerations in neonatal care; teamwork; inter-professional collaboration; inquiry based learning.
