Course aim

To enable students to demonstrate appropriate midwifery knowledge and skills in a clinical practice environment and to achieve the course objectives in alignment with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) National practice standards for the Midwife through midwifery clinical placements.

Course content

Collaboration; teamwork; assessment of perinatal mental health and specific mental illness (mood and anxiety); management of mental illness during antenatal, intra partum and postnatal periods; assessment of anxiety and depression using standardised tools including ANRQ and the EPDS; evidence-based, ethical and cultural safe practice; reflective practice and woman-centred care in the presence of psychological issues; challenges in communication; managing conflict; personal and professional development; portfolio; continuity of care; safety and quality; primary health; midwifery competencies; professional boundaries.
