English: Past and Future

Course aim

To further develop students' critical understanding of the past forms, current changes and possible futures for the English language and its many varieties around the world, and will develop international perspectives on the English language.

Course content

This course examines the origins and historical development of the English language. Students will review the major stages in the history of English, through in-depth linguistic analysis of literary texts from different periods of its history. They will critically evaluate the issues around the spread of English throughout the world and the future status of English as a world language.
