Everyday Cultures Now and Then

Course aim

To build on students’ knowledge of contemporary accounts of everyday life, both past and present. The use of theory will situate everyday life as a site for understanding culture. The course will deepen students’ understanding of the relationship between theory and practice by familiarising them with principles of ethnographic research.

Course content

Students will increase their understanding of how theory can be used as a tool to examine accounts of everyday life. Students will develop case studies of everyday life by drawing on theorists such as Bourdieu, de Certeau and Foucault, coupled with some fieldwork experiences. Topics such as suburban houses, gardens, food, lifestyle, technology, and fashion will be examined to understand how they developed historically, and continue to shape identity, resistance and pleasure in contemporary times.
