School of Education
To extend students’ understanding of children and childhood, how Western ideas about children have developed
and how this is reflected in personal, ideological, theoretical and research based approaches to the field of early
childhood.
Students will critically examine multiple perspectives of children and childhood throughout history and explore
how historical as well as contemporary perspectives have informed and continue to inform how children are
positioned and treated within societies and in education/care settings. Students will also critically reflect upon
how their own understandings of children and childhood have been shaped and serve to inform their professional work with children. Students engage with current constructivist approaches to children’s development and how
they may be applied in educational settings.
