Course aim

To develop an understanding of the impact of individual and societal factors on the cause, progression and consequences of health, illness and disability that underpin the biopsychosocial model in physiotherapy practice.

Course content

Social determinants of health; health issues for particular populations such as older and rural Australians, migrants, workers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Cultural awareness and competencies. Psychology of symptom perception; illness cognitions; risk behaviours; emotions; motivation; compliance; stress (and burnout) and groups. Physiotherapy oriented introductory skills in cultural competence, cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing, stress management.
