Primary Health Care Approaches in Occupational Therapy

Course aim

The aim of this course is to enable students to describe and design occupational therapy practices which embed primary health care, social health models and the principles of community development.

Course content

Primary Health Care, Alma Ata, Ottawa Charter; Population health; Social determinants of health and health inequalities; Community development principles and practices including community assessment and analysis, participation and partnership. Trans-cultural practice and ethical practice. Factors that impact on occupational performance and health from a community perspective, including socio-economic, political, physical, interpersonal and cultural dimensions of environment.
Impacts of cultural and health beliefs on peoples understanding and response to health challenges and subsequent approaches to practice. Exploration of occupational performance and health issues and subsequent community approaches to service delivery as they apply to a range of communities and health issues including but not limited to Australian rural populations, majority world communities, minority groups and Indigenous Australians.
