Course aim

To equip students with the evidence based clinical nutrition knowledge and skills that will enable them to nutritionally assess clients/patients and implement the appropriate medical nutrition therapy for the major life style associated conditions.

Course content

This course will focus on the major life style diseases such as diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome and their evidence based medical nutrition management. It will include the individual pathophysiology, the contribution of diet as well as other risk factors contributing to their development and prevention. The course will cover the principles of dietetic management and how these link with the total care for these conditions. Students will learn about nutritional assessment methods and tools used in dietetic practice and their application. Through practical application, using cased based scenarios students will learn about and develop skills in the process of medical nutritional management, including the development of nutrition care plans, nutrition goals and implementation of the care plan. For each of the conditions the role of relevant medication used and the use and interpretation of biochemical data will be covered. Students will use their previous food and nutrition knowledge in the development of nutrition care plans.
