Course aim

To explore specialist survey applications and techniques associated with road engineering, construction, mining and hydrographic surveying.

Course content

Horizontal, vertical and transition curves for road engineering. Geotechnical issues associated with road design and survey. Geometrical design criteria for roads. Construction surveying principles. Control establishment, maintenance and transfer. As-built and movement monitoring surveys. Open cut and underground mining overview. Legislative requirements for mine surveying practice. Survey control establishment and transfer. Underground set out and tunnelling. Subsidence monitoring. Volume determinations. Introduction to hydrographic surveying. Tide analysis. Nautical charts and datums. International hydrographic surveying standards. Sonar systems, depth measurement and sea floor mapping techniques. Hydrographic survey planning. Law of the sea.
