Course aim

To introduce students to the basic principles of surveying, , the fundamentals and recording of field measurements & the reductions and computation of various spatial data.
To introduce students to the fundamentals of survey graphics and, the application of computer software in survey data computation and presentation.

Course content

Introduction to the surveying profession, surveying instrumentation & measurement and recording techniques. Review of trigonometry and solutions of plane triangles. Processing of field data and computation of height, coordinate, area and volume information. 2D linear transformations. Survey graphics and plan drafting. Topographic field surveys and terrain representation. Introduction to electronic data capture and processing. Elementary CAD principles used in electronic survey data presentation. Overview of differential GPS systems and applications.
