Course aim

To develop students’ advanced knowledge of design documentation conventions, and competence in applying research and architectural processes, strategies and practices to studio projects.

Course content

Students will develop further knowledge of design in the context of theories of culture, value, tectonics and technology and their integration in the design and resolution of more complex buildings and environments, and their professional responsibilities to clients, society and the environment. Students will enhance the management of the documentation process by acquiring skills in planning, organising and controlling design development, and the coordination of the project team. Students will also gain skills in project management through project definition, feasibility and appraisal, time, cost, quality, risk, procurement, organisational structures and communication, computer software and scheduling tools, project commissioning and handover, evaluation and feedback. Students will synthesise the development of a complex building design into a comprehensive set of contract documents by incorporating complex design intentions and the principles of building structures, building services, building regulation and codes, construction systems and materials.
