Course Alert: This course is no longer available for enrolment
The course aims to give students knowledge of and practical experience with advanced mathematical and/or statistical theories and techniques arising in one or more of the following areas: applied mathematics, optimisation, applied statistics and quantitative finance. During their studies, the students will be given an opportunity to apply this knowledge to solve practical problems. The course also aims to prepare high achieving students for research.
The topics covered in this course may include a selection of topics from Numerical Linear Algebra, Introduction to Partial Differential Equations, Computational Biology, Stochastic Calculus, Advanced Operations Research, Optimal Control, Advanced Topics in Applied Mathematics, Advanced Topics in Optimization, Advanced Topics in Quantitative Finance and/or, with Program Director approval, a selection of appropriate elective courses of equivalent value from the Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Honours courses offered by the University of Adelaide and the Flinders University of South Australia, or from the Honours Computer and Information Science electives offered by the University of South Australia. Students will be advised of available and recommended topics.
The course will be offered in one of two formats depending on the number of students enrolled. For large student enrolments, the format will be in a traditional classroom style, lecture-tutorial mode of delivery, covering presentation of theoretical material and solution of selected problems (Offering 1). Otherwise, the format will be of directed study, with students required to contribute to presentations of solutions to selected problems. A corresponding means of assessment will apply for each mode of Offering.
