You will gain an understanding of agency and property management, planning and property economics, as well as real estate law, investment and development. This will set you up for a career as a real estate agent or property manager in residential, commercial and industrial property.

You will also learn how to make effective and strategic business decisions and start to develop skills in entrepreneurship to understand the importance of a competitive edge in business.

Employers look for graduates who can apply theory to real industry challenges. During your degree you will have the opportunity to attend networking events designed to connect you with experienced industry professionals. As a graduate, you may also be eligible to seek registration as a land agent, sales representative or property manager with Consumer Business Services.

The degree starts with core courses in areas such as analytics, accounting and economic theory. These will give you a solid grasp of business fundamentals that you can apply to a range of careers.  

In your specialisation you will develop your expertise across areas such as property agency and property management, marketing and entrepreneurship, as well as real estate law and investment.

Specific areas include real estate practice and marketing management, property law and economics, building evaluation, real estate management and entrepreneurship.

You will also be able to use your electives to complete a minor in marketing to complement your real estate practice studies. This will allow you to gain expertise in consumer behaviour, advertising, digital marketing, branding and marketing analytics.

Study hours

For each course you study, you will need to allocate time for various classes such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals. Plus, you will need additional hours to study in your own time to complete assignments, readings and projects and contribute to online discussion forums (independent study). So as a general rule, if you are studying full-time you would need to allocate 12 – 26 hours of study when at university and 14 – 28 hours of independent study per week.

You will graduate with the expertise to become a real estate agent or property manager in residential, commercial and industrial property.

You will focus on specialised courses in areas such as management, marketing and entrepreneurship, and have the opportunity to undertake a minor in marketing to complement your specialist skills.

  • Portfolio manager: making property investment decisions and carrying out investment activities on behalf of clients or institutions; implementing investment strategies; managing day-to-day portfolio operations
  • Property agency manager: managing and maintaining residential, commercial and/or industrial rental properties; analysing market conditions and ensuring properties are occupied; organising records and documents and handling contracts; organising regular property maintenance
  • Property developer: researching land and property opportunities and evaluating the feasibility of a project; assessing the best use for the land or property; planning the property development, including the schedule and costs; working with architects, builders, and local councils
  • Real estate agency owner: owning, operating and managing a real estate agency
  • Real estate agent: negotiating and arranging the buying and selling in real estate transactions; advising clients on how to price properties and prepare for sale; marketing properties

Professional accreditation and recognition

This program satisfies the educational requirements for registration with Consumer Business Services as a land agent under the Land Agents Act 1994 and registration as a sales representative or property manager, as determined by the South Australian Commissioner for Consumer Affairs.

Please note, all student visa holders are required to meet their visa condition to study no more than one-third of their program in an online mode and maintain enrolment in at least one internal (face-to-face) course per compulsory study period, unless it is their final course and not available internally. Your program director

I am a Senior lecturer in Economics and Financial Planning, and my research focus is on international economics in the context of capital flows and their implications on economic growth. I am passionate about teaching and I lecture a broad range of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In this degree, graduates will gain the skills required to practise as a professional real estate agent or property manager, and upon graduation may be eligible to register as a qualified land agent or property manager with Consumer Business Services in South Australia.
