This honours degree offers you the opportunity to develop advanced research and analytical skills; you will also complete a thesis or creative artefact plus exegesis under the supervision of an academic supervisor. Courses studied are practice-based theoretical and technical, catering for the needs of a successful, professional jazz musician.
You can gain an extra qualification and broaden your career prospects by completing a Diploma in Languages.
For each course you study, you will need to allocate time for various classes such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals. Plus you will need additional hours to study in your own time to complete assignments, readings and projects and contribute to online discussion forums (independent study). So as a general rule, if you are studying full-time you would need to allocate 12 – 26 hours of study when at university and 14 – 28 hours of independent study per week.

The honours component includes a minimum of one year of advanced studies in research and professional practice. You will receive First Class, Second Class or Third Class Honours, depending on your performance. You will graduate with industry experience and connections, and a higher level qualification than a bachelor degree. Your honours year will prepare you for further higher degree studies by research and/or future leadership roles.

This degree is taught in Mount Gambier at the James Morrison Academy of Music. This degree offers a unique experience to aspiring musicians where they can work with some of the finest jazz educators in the world. The courses are performance-based, where students don’t just learn about music – they learn how to make music.
The James Morrison Academy of Music is situated in the 'Old Town Hall' in Mount Gambier right in the heart of the city. Apart from having all the facilities we need within this beautiful historic building, we are also right next to the City Library and Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, creating a cultural precinct around the Cave Gardens.
