Graduate Certificate in Space Studies
You're considered an Australian student if you are any of the following:
The Graduate Certificate in Space Studies gives you the opportunity to focus on an individual research project identified by you, with the supervision and advice of experts from the SHSSP program.
Topics for research will vary across the subjects introduced in the SHSSP program, they will range from space related technology to space biology, economics, law and policy. It is an extension of the Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program (SH-SSP), offered by UniSA in partnership with the International Space University (ISU).
You will commence with an intensive three-day phase at UniSA immediately following the SH-SSP. You will then complete your work online from your home institution. The fee for this qualification in 2018 is AUD $6,975. This works out at 25 percent of an equivalent full time (EFT) year at AUD $27,900.
The Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program (SH-SSP) comprises the first half of this Graduate Certificate in Space Studies. It is an intensive, five week, live-in experience during the southern hemisphere summer. Completion is a UniSA prerequisite for this qualification1.
Studies are based on the international, intercultural and interdisciplinary educational philosophy for which the International Space University (ISU) is renowned. It is conducted jointly with UniSA, and graduates are awarded an SH-SSP Executive Certificate. The SH-SSP focuses on space applications, space policy and space services. It provides a well-rounded overview of the principles and concepts involved in space science, space systems engineering and technology, space business and management, and space legal and regulatory issues.
1 An alternative prerequisite is completion of an International Space University Space Studies Program held elsewhere in the world.
Your research topic will be based on an issue that arises during your studies in the Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program (SH-SSU). Research themes have direct application to space studies and could include global warming, environmental monitoring, disaster mitigation, GIS, remote area communications, or telemedicine. Specific research topics will vary. They can come from the numerous subjects introduced in SH-SSP, ranging from space related technology to space biology, economics, law and policy.
Staff from UniSA and the International Space University (ISU) will provide expert supervision for the space studies projects.
For each course you study, you will need to allocate time for various classes such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals. Plus you will need additional hours to study in your own time to complete assignments, readings and projects and contribute to online discussion forums. So as a general rule, if you are studying full-time you would need to allocate 12 – 26 hours of study when at university and 14 – 28 hours of independent study per week.
Your assessment will include:
The Graduate Certificate in Space Studies is based on the international, intercultural and interdisciplinary educational philosophy for which the International Space University (ISU) is renowned. Extend your learnings from the SH-SSP with targeted, multidisciplinary research into a theme with direct space application, such as global warming, environmental monitoring, disaster mitigation, GIS, remote area communications, or telemedicine.
Upon successful completion of the SH-SSP and/or the Graduate Certificate in Space Studies, you may be granted credit in a UniSA undergraduate program, pending approval of the UniSA Program Director. The Graduate Certificate in Space Studies can also provide a pathway towards further tertiary study or a career in the space sector. UniSA’s research has been recognised as well above world class1 in:
