Aim

To prepare students to work as key community health workers through the development of knowledge, professional communication skills and attitudes that support the coordination and enhancement of community based services and the establishment of positive partnerships models to improve the health, wellbeing and dignity of individuals and groups

Content & Structure

Courses within the first year of the Bachelor of Community Health provide students with an understanding of human biology, psychology, determinants of health, global and national health, mental health and cultural safety. In the second year students build on this knowledge and undertake studies in health promotion, nutrition, professional communication, disability, health law, ethics and policy and project management. In the final year of the program students study courses that develop the transition to employment such as public health, case management, age friendly environments and a capstone course that fosters further skills in developing projects where a gap exists in the delivery of services, or activities in the community. Students will develop an understanding of consumer directed care and self-determination and the role of a key worker in supporting individuals and groups in the community. Two (2) elective courses are offered for students to extend knowledge in an area compatible with program aims. The program requires completion of 108 units of study.
