Aim

The Bachelor of Film and Television provides a specialist program structure to students interested in a career within the film, television and visual effects industries, enabling them to graduate with a portfolio of work and practical industry experience. Students will develop critical analysis and communication skills in a range of media technologies across a variety of platforms to undertake professional work in design and production.

This industry focussed degree will provide students with relevant course content, as well as practical, theoretical, creative and professional skills, designed to provide enhanced graduate outcomes and smooth the transition to employment in the film, television and visual effects industries.

The program also provides pathways for further learning in a standalone one-year Honours degree or industry focussed Graduate Certificates.

Content & Structure

Throughout the Bachelor of Film and Television program, students will explore theory and practice combining traditional and digital forms required by industry. Students will gain an understanding in all stages of the professional production cycle from conceptualisation and script writing, through to production and post-production. Students will analyse film and media from around the globe to gain insight into different creative contexts, forms and practices. Students will develop professional knowledge in screenwriting, cinematic design, and the production of documentary, experimental and narrative film and television, and VFX, while understanding different media platforms and the end-user experience.

Students will engage with industry leaders across all disciplines, work on real-world projects and use the latest production software and technologies, graduating career ready with their own portfolio of production work, showcasing practical skills and creativity across a variety of media forms. All students will complete 13 core courses in first and second year, and can either go on to develop an in-depth knowledge of VFX throughout second year or alternatively take a minor and complementary electives in another related discipline. Employment prospects in VFX are strong, and if students choose to take all of the VFX courses available in the second year of the program they will have the opportunity to apply for a placement with Rising Sun Pictures, studying the entire third year of the program at their studio located in Adelaide and working alongside world-class VFX artists. Places are limited and entry is competitive.

Students will work autonomously and collaboratively throughout their program, as in industry, across a range of different roles, preparing them for a move into national and international industries after graduation.
