Course aim

To investigate the challenges and opportunities in teaching English in the 21st century Australian context and apply knowledge of linguistic and cultural diversity to plan for quality teaching in mixed ability classrooms.

Course content

The course is about inclusive literacy practices in secondary English teaching with a focus on Senior English, digital literacies, critical reading of literature and professional identity. Students will learn about the challenges and opportunities in the English Curriculum for students who have English as an additional language or dialect, for Aboriginal students and for students with learning difficulties/disabilities. The course covers inclusive teaching approaches in English and students will practice applying inclusive strategies to engage all students in their classes. The use of digital texts in the English classroom will be explored in the context of digital literacy as a social and material practice and students will show their knowledge of critical reading as is consistent with the SACE curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their own developing professional identity as English teachers and show their understanding of the principles that underlie good English teaching in the 21st century Australian context.
