Course aim

To develop students’ understanding of Australian Muslim communities, their histories, values, beliefs, contributions and interconnections to the Australian social fabric. Through a contemporary lens, students will gain insights into Muslim faith-based perspectives on civic, social, and environmental issues related to HASS areas of study.

Course content

This course will begin by tracing the history of Muslims in Australia from across diverse cultural groups and contemporary periods, including their early interactions with Indigenous peoples. Students will then progress to learning about contemporary Muslim communities in Australia – their diverse cultures, ethnicities, languages, trajectories, and religious perspectives. Through an analysis of Australian Muslim diversity, students will have an opportunity to unpack contemporary debates, issues, and sentiments held by and about Muslim communities while at the same time learning about Muslim-faith-based perspectives and contributions to national socio-economic priorities. Throughout the course, students can expect to make curriculum connections to HASS areas of study within a culturally responsive pedagogy.
