Course aim

To provide students with a critical understanding of the key aspects required to undertake action research on responsive pedagogy for Muslim students in the early years and/or primary HaSS educational setting. Students will draw on research questions and areas of interest in responsive pedagogy developed throughout their program to present a research proposal and carry out a small-scale action research.

Course content

Students will synthesise their knowledge and understandings of the diversity of Muslim students, their worldview, perspectives and ways of knowing, to design and implement an applied research project, guided by culturally responsive research methods and ethics and professional standards of practice.

Applied research projects are to be negotiated with the course coordinator. Sample applied research projects could relate to:

  • Responsive pedagogy and classroom practices
  • Building relationships
  • Engagement with and inclusion of students' life worlds
  • Learning environment and learning ecologies
  • Inclusion of beliefs, values and traditions
