Course aim

This course aims to provide the student with an opportunity to undertake a research problem or for advanced study in one of the following areas of specialisation: applied mathematics, pure mathematics, statistics, or optimisation under the supervision of a mathematician or statistician. The course also aims to prepare the student who has successfully completed this and the Honours Mathematics Project 1 course, for research studies in an area of mathematics or statistics.

Course content

Students will undertake an individual research project proposed by an identified supervisor. Depending on the project scope and availability of the supervisor, a project may be undertaken entirely within this course or be a continuation of a project undertaken in the course Honours Mathematics and Statistics Project 1. A project can form part of a larger research project currently being investigated by the supervisor, or be a self-contained, research problem, or a literature review of a particular research topic, in the latter case with the intention of the student developing an understanding of a complete program of research.
