Course aim

The aim of the course is to introduce students from a non-science background to the basic concepts of science and the scientific method; focussing on the biosciences area of biology and also including some fundamental chemistry.

Course content

The course balances practical and theoretical knowledge to enhance students’ understanding of scientific enquiry. The course introduces the concepts of life sciences and biological aspects of living organisms; including some fundamental chemistry ideas. It explores broad concepts such as what is science, the scientific method, physical quantities and phenomena, the basic unit of life; the cell, genetics, human biology, investigating matter and chemical reactions.

It also provides a brief understanding of the periodic table of elements, particularly those elements involved in the human body and living things. The course will also explore how to represent data graphically, manipulate equations and use of computer software. Through this course via some laboratory classes students begin to develop their practical knowledge, skills and techniques in the laboratory and understanding of safety.
