Communication for Academic Purposes (OC)
This course will build on the key skills required for written work at an Academic level. Practical in nature it will cover fundamental aspects of question comprehension; paragraph and essay construction, key areas of common English grammar including punctuation and register, and enable students to apply reading strategies for complex texts. It will also examine the difference in writing styles for varying disciplines and encompass reading, skimming and scanning, note-taking, summarising, building an academic argument, referencing and academic integrity skills. Across the course of the semester students will build an online portfolio and engage in writing for various purposes.
Reading for academic purposes; recognising and summarising key arguments and ideas in a range of academic texts from various disciplines. Improve written English expression to convey ideas in a clear and succinct manner, suitable for tertiary study. Constructing various text types that adhere to conventions; accurately utilising citations and recognising the importance of evidence to underpin academic writing.
