Course aim

This course will build on students' knowledge of Aboriginal cultures and understanding in contemporary Australia. By reflecting upon non-indigenous and indigenous representations of Aboriginal people in the media, students will explore the roles of race, gender and social inequality within their own learning and community contexts. In addition, a focus on language, traditions and customs will be explored.

Course content

Aboriginal knowledges, learning and cultures will draw on students understanding of culture and country and compare this with mainstream attitudes. The foundation of Aboriginal tradition, culture and spirituality focusses on connectedness and relatedness. This will be utilised by encouraging students to share their knowledge, then reflect on alternative views of indigenous culture and society, particularly those portrayed in the media.
