To improve academic literacy skills of students for application in the university environment.
This course will build on the key skills required for written work at an Academic level. Practical in nature it will cover fundamental aspects of question comprehension; paragraph and essay construction, key areas of common English grammar including punctuation and register, and enable students to apply reading strategies for complex texts. It will also examine the difference in writing styles for varying disciplines and encompass skimming and scanning, note-taking, summarising, building an academic argument, referencing and academic integrity skills. Each week students will construct different text types commonly used at university level, and be taught the importance of editing and proofing written work.
