Examine the body of recorded work associated from the period of the early 1970s to the present day in conjunction with the relevant literature; in addition to continuing to develop the students understanding of the fundamental principles and techniques of arranging and their application within a jazz context.
A focus on the development of jazz from the early 1970s to the present day, concentrating on the major musical innovations, definitive stylistic characteristics, external musical influences and seminal jazz artists from the period. Advanced music arranging skills will be developed through an examination of musical elements and key arranging concepts, with the practice of arranging music for a large sized jazz ensemble being used to support and apply the underpinning constructs. Primary focuses will include: presentation and layout of music, understanding of technical limits and possibilities of the studied instruments, intermediate arranging techniques and tools of creative expression.
