To develop the student's facility in the technical and stylistic aspects of improvisation underpinned by aural skills training and musical theory studies.
Basic jazz improvisation techniques are studied in order to develop the student's facility in the technical and stylistic aspects of improvisation. This is supported by ongoing training to develop basic aural skills to hear and identify the modes of the diatonic major scale, diminished, diminished dominant, whole tone and bop scales. A theoretical understanding of musical construction will also be developed. Ensemble repertoire will be used to provide a basis for these improvisations, with both harmonic and rhythmic aspects of improvisation being considered.
