Course aim

The aim of this course is to develop knowledge of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics to inform advanced assessment and prescribing practice.

Course content

Pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacognosy, toxicology, clinical drug trials, prescription and non-prescription drugs, implications of generic and brand names when prescribing medications, clinical drug trials.  Teratogenesis, adverse drug reactions, interactions, precautions, contraindications related to drugs in midwifery practice. Quality use of medicines and the role of the midwife, legal and ethical considerations relating to prescribing of medicines including relevant legislation, guidelines and policies.
