Course aim

Students will explore the eligible midwife role related to clinical pharmacology through in depth examination of common medicines used across the continuum of childbirth and midwifery practice areas including major drug classifications likely to be used in their own practice client population.

Course content

Prescribing medicines; use of medication charts; classifications of commonly prescribed medicines in the area of midwifery specialisation; application of relevant legislation as it relates to eligible midwife practice; regulatory framework, standing drug orders and protocols; client adherence to use of medicines, Australian Medicines Terminology. Risk Management, recreational drugs, complementary medicines, psychology of prescribing, communicating information about medicines and patient-centred care.
