Language Learning and Assessment

Course aim

To advance students' knowledge and theories of how first and second languages are acquired and to apply analytic methods to investigate language learning and assessment in diverse contexts.

Course content

This course will advance students' understanding of how first languages and second languages are acquired in formal and informal contexts around the world, including bilingual and multilingual development and the relationship between first or second language learning and the development of literacies. Students will engage with research on language learning and assessment, and the conditions that influence varying degrees of bilingualism and multilingualism. The course includes consideration of influences such as age, cross-linguistic and affective factors, individual learner differences and the impact of new technologies.

Prerequisite(s)

Completion of any two second year courses from the Applied Linguistics or English Language Major / Sub-major within the Bachelor of Arts (MBAA), or English Language Major within the Bachelor Creative Industries (DBCI), or by approval from the Program Director.
