Course aim

To introduce theoretical concepts and equip students with practical ways needed to assist learners of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) to function effectively in settings where Standard Australian English is used.

Course content

Students will develop understanding of working with children and young learners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including Indigenous; making content comprehensible to learners of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD). Students will also be introduced to the sociocultural context of EALD, including educational, cultural, historical, racial and inter-group issues; promotion of linguistic development through content-based instruction; needs analysis; assessment and reporting in the context of multilingualism; and the role of the culturally and linguistically aware teacher in the workplace and wider educational community.
