Course aim

The aim of this course it to enable students to design controllers that make systems respond as desired.

Course content

Background to control: mathematical modelling; review of transform theory; transfer functions; block diagrams; time-domain responses.

Classical control: continuous-time mathematical representation of system dynamics; feedback control; system stability; design of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers and lag-lead compensators ; using root locus, Ziegler-Nichols, and frequency response methods.

Modern control: state-space modelling of systems.
