Course aim

To introduce students to the concept of ‘design language’, and to outline how an understanding of these elements can empower and enrich design practice.

Course content

Design Language in Media Arts highlights and explores the underlying existence of consistent rules in the ways that nature, design and the processes of digital media software all operate. This course focuses on the concept of ‘design language’, using metaphors of 'grammar' and 'vocabulary' taken from natural language, and outlines how an understanding of these elements can empower and enrich design practice in film, animation and digital media. Both theory and practical work will explore these concepts through case studies and projects. Students will communicate their work through print and digital graphics, and still and moving images. The course will culminate with an end-of semester design exhibition and screening, displaying the students’ exploration into design language.
