Course aim

To develop critical understanding and appropriate pedagogical content knowledge required by pre-service teachers (PSTs) to teach Aboriginal students, and to teach all students about Aboriginal histories, cultures, and languages as required by AITSL’s Professional Standards for Teachers 1.4 and 2.4.

Course content

PSTs will develop knowledge and critical understandings of current Aboriginal Education research and theoretical frameworks to improve Aboriginal students' achievement toward closing the gap on education disparities. The core focus is preparing PSTs to enact the national Australian Curriculum to meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers that directly concern Aboriginal education: the teaching of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students (AITSL 1.4), and the embedding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, histories and heritage across the curriculum (AITSL 2.4). Early childhood students could also draw upon the Early Years Learning Framework (2009).
