Segregation and Resistance: Aboriginal People and Government

Course aim

To analyse the engagement between Aboriginal people, government and society in the 20th Century using primary historical materials.

Course content

Using primary historical materials (including government archives), students will immerse themselves in the history of relations between Aboriginal people, government and wider society in the 20th century. They will develop their capacity for analysis and critical thinking as they consider past government policies, practices and legislation directed at Aboriginal people; the differential treatment of Aboriginal people and communities according to geography; racism in Australian society; Aboriginal resistance, protest and strikes; the Stolen Generations; and the contradictions inherent in the policies of protectionism, assimilation and segregation.
