Course aim

The course aims to introduce the students to differential and integral calculus of vector-valued functions, which arise in a wide range of application areas such as engineering, fluid mechanics, electromagnetism and other areas of physics.

Course content

Vectors and orthogonal transformations; curvilinear coordinates and summation convention; scalar and vector valued functions; the gradient of a scalar field, divergence and curl of vector fields; surface and volume elements in generalise curvilinear coordinates; line integrals; surface integrals; the theorems of Green, Gauss and Stokes; applications.
