Course aim

To extend students' abilities to analyse and critically appraise the interplay of economics and politics in global capitalism, contemporary world economy, and international relations.

Course content

Students will be able to conceptually link investment in human capital development to economic development, productivity growth, and innovation. Students will appraise contemporary debates and contend perspectives on international political economy and review the economic role of government and governance in the context of trade liberalisation, market deregulation, capital markets, and foreign direct investments.

Students will critically analyse the roles of multinational corporations and international, regional, and non-government organisations in global political economy and international development. They will also examine the implications of political economy and human development indices as alternative measures to aggregate GDP growth.
