Course aim

To provide education in the areas of space science, space technology and space policy through application to a major global issue.

Course content

The project topic will be on a theme related to the application of space assets or knowledge for the benefit of the humankind in general. Potential themes would include global warming, environmental monitoring, disaster mitigation, GIS, remote area communications and telemedicine. Students will apply knowledge acquired during the ISU Southern Hemisphere Summer Space Program (SHSSP) and be exposed to multicultural approaches to problem solving. Each student will have the opportunity to apply their own skills and knowledge and will bring to the project their own cultural approach.

The individual project will require a student to work collaboratively with the course coordinator and supervisors to produce the following outputs:
- a project concept
- a project proposal
- a published project report
- a project presentation via video conferencing

The project will be conducted in 2 phases:
- an intensive phase conducted on campus in which students are expected to be in attendance full time for three days in February immediately following the conclusion of the SHSSP culminating in the presentation of the individual project concepts

- a remote phase of 13 weeks in which students may return to their homes or workplaces and contribute using on-line communications and systems to prepare and finalise their project report, culminating in the presentation of the report to an invited audience with some students in Adelaide and the remainder contributing by video conference.
