Course aim

To provide students with an understanding of issues surrounding economic growth and development, and of business cycles, and to critically analyse the policy actions and responses of governments, central banks and other policymakers.

Course content

This course will be structured around three main topic areas. The first is the economy in the long run and an analysis of the major determinants and consequences of growth. Here we uncover why some countries grow more quickly than others and why some remain poor. The second is the analysis of the economy in the short run. Here, we examine the causes and consequences of inflation and output growth and the role that policymakers have in reducing inflation and promoting output growth. The third section is devoted to some applications of macroeconomic analysis such as financial crises, globalisation and the open economy.
