Energy and Climate Change Law

Course aim

To provide students with an understanding of the Australian energy sector and the impact of domestic and international legal and policy developments, reflecting world-wide concerns over diminishing natural resources, market fluctuations; ownership; security of energy supply; the environmental hazards of energy production and consumption; and corporate responsibility.

Course content

1. Legal and regulatory frameworks of the electricity, gas and renewable energy sectors in Australia, including the National Electricity Rules and the Natural Gas Law and Rules
2. The structure of the existing energy markets in Australia and the impact of the new policy, governance and regulatory framework of the Australian Energy Market; and the role of the Australian Energy Regulator
3. The role of the key stakeholders in the Australian Energy Market and developments in corporate reporting and responsibility
4. The adverse impact of energy production and consumption on the environment, in particular greenhouse gas emissions, and international imperatives
5. Domestic responses to dealing with environmental harm and the energy sector; the development of the emissions trading scheme, carbon capture and renewable energy targets
6. Ownership and security of energy supply

Assessment

Presentation in pairs on weekly topic, Research Paper, Student participation, comprising of weekly critical reflections (10%) and participation in online/class discussions and questions on student presentations (10%)
