Course aim

To develop an understanding of the relationship between human physiology/psychology and the aviation environment by focusing on the function and limitations of the human body.

Course content

  • Terminology and principles, the role of psychology in human performance.
  • Flight deck design and the process of vision, physical properties of the eye, and illusions relevant to aviation.
  • The process of hearing and related psychological issues, auditory system interaction with visual system.
  • Respiration: the atmosphere and process of breathing - hypoxia and other respiratory impairments.
  • Sleep, jet lag and fatigue: physiological aspects such as circadian rhythms.
  • The influence of lifestyle factors on health, fitness and performance: alcohol, smoking, drugs and hypertension.
  • Memory and mnemonic devices for increasing memory capacity.
