Contemporary Applications of Economic Theory

Course aim

To show students how the analytical methods they have learned can help them understand the real world through demonstrating the application of economic theory and policy analysis tools to topics of current social, national and international interest.

Course content

This course will expose students to in-depth, real-world applications of the economic modeling techniques in the areas of macro- and micro-economics. Specific content covered will include applied microeconomic topics such as analysing monopoly power in theory and practice; anticompetitive behaviour and antitrust policy; basic theory and applications of auctions, as well as applied macroeconomic ones such as the economic growth and real business cycles, inflation and monetary policy, open-economy macroeconomics, exchange rate regimes and balance of payments crises. Within each topic, relevant theoretical concepts and models will first be reviewed and students will be shown how to customise them to examine questions specific to that topic. Students will then pick a policy-related topic and write an essay/report using recent data from sources such as the ABS, HILDA, etc. for their analysis.
